The Cello Banjo originated in the late 1880’s and was used as a staple of banjos orchestras during that time period being used mostly to play the cello parts in a “classical” orchestra repertoire. Generally tuned a full octave below a standard banjo, this created the deep tones necessary for full orchestral pieces played by mulitiple banjos. Unfortunately, by about the 1920’s, the banjo craze amongst mainstream America was fading and the Cello Banjo slipped into near extinction. Thankfully, Gold Tone brought back the Cello Banjo and now contemporary players can experience this new and fascinating low banjo voice for use in any kind of music!
